The Kiwi love affair with Feijoas began in the early 1900's when the first of these sub-tropical shrubs was introduced into the country from South America. Here at Wairere we are a big fan of this fabulous fruit and we aim to stock all your favourite varieties old and new. The Feijoa is commonly known as the 'Pineapple Guava' describing its unique aromatic and tropical fruit flavour. The Feijoa gets its name from the 19th century Brazilian Botanist Don de Silva Feijo. At Wairere we stock all the popular varieties such as 'Apollo', 'Mammoth', 'Unique', 'Wiki Tu'. We also stock recent introductions such as 'Pounamu',' Kakapo' and 'Kaiteri'. A relatively new Feijoa to us is 'Tull's Supreme' which has exceptionally large and delicious fruit. Feijoas are perfect for fresh eating and chock full of Vitamin C and dietary fibre. They are also great for adding to cakes and for making jams and chutneys. Check out our recipes on www.wairere.co.nz. Feijoas are easy to grow, reasonably disease resistant and remarkably hardy to cold conditions once established. They do best in a warm, sheltered spot in free draining soil. While many are self-fertile they will fruit better with cross pollination so plant more than 1 for best results. The fruit ripen from February right through to June depending on the variety and fall naturally to the ground when they are ready to eat. Feijoas can be used for screens and hedging and the cherry red flowers that appear in summer are a nice complement to the attractive grey-green foliage. Visit Wairere nursery at 826 Gordonton Road, Hamilton to check out the best Feijoa variety for your patch or simply shop from our secure website and we will carefully package and freight your fabulous Feijoa direct to your door.
